The word Shakamak is a Kickapoo Indian word meaning "river of the long fish". The name refers to a native fish (Gar), which is long and slender.  Shakamak has the largest Group Camp in the state, capable of housing 260 people when filled to capacity.  According to the park director, our Senior Camp week is the largest group in the camp all summer, coming in with 200 campers and 48 support staff.

The campground has a layout somewhat like a large letter "L", with cabins spread all around the edge of the wrap-around driveway.  Each cabin holds 24 people.   We have 6 cabins for girls and 5 cabins for boys.  In addition, there is a large Mess Hall, a Craft Hall and a huge Recreation Hall.  All our evening activites happen at the Recreation Hall ("Rec Hall" for short).  There is a large bathroom/shower complex located near the center of camp. The Nurses/Directors Cabin is also near the center of camp.  We do all canoeing on the lake, located down the trail behind the Mess Hall.  There is also a large outdoor Ampitheater near the Mess Hall, where we hold our opening and closing ceremonies.
