Camp has a Registered nurse available throughout the camp week. Due to liability concerns, we cannot allow children to take medicines without approval from the nurse on duty. During check-in, the nurse will take all medications your child may need during camp, and will properly store and dispense them to your child throughout the week. If your child fails to show up at the proper time, the nurse will find them and give them the medicine(s) they need. You don't get this kind of service at home! There are some medications that the nurse will permit campers to keep (e.g. inhalers), but this decision must be made by the nurse after examining the medicine(s) involved, and speaking with the camper to know their familiarity with using it. It is critical that you record your child's medical issues on the camp registration form. This permits the nurse to diagnose and treat your child, and this information could be life-saving in an emergency. Please be sure that you provide the correct phone number for your regular physician as well. The registration form also asks you to declare which over the counter medications you will allow your child to receive at camp: items like Mylanta, Tylenol, and Kaopectate. If you do not check the item, the nurse will not administer it to your child, period. If they receive it more than twice, expect a call from the nurse to discuss the matter. We cannot transport children to doctors or hospitals for non-emergency situations. For example, a child that has a bad case of poison ivy may need a hydrocortisone injection at the doctor's office. In this case, we will contact the people listed in the contact section of the registration form, beginning at the top of the list. We will describe the situation and ask you to come take your child out for medical care. If you live far away, we suggest that you pair up with a friend or other parent who lives within a reasonable driving distance of camp. If you don't know someone, ask the camp director for possible parent names to contact before camp. This policy was enacted to keep our medical personnel on the campground as much as possible, so we aren't missing a nurse if a serious emergency happens on the grounds. We hope you understand this reasoning, and our concern for your child's welfare. Speaking of your child's welfare: until camp is concluded, we will not release a camper to anyone who is not on the approved list (in Registration form). We confirm the identity of the person before releasing any child to them. If you make arrangements with a friend to pick up your child during camp, be sure to add them to your approved list or we cannot let your child leave with them.
