Today we continue our overall camp theme of “Impossible is Nothing,” with today’s specific theme being “Triumph Over Tragedy is Possible.” Compadre Andy Harrison taught this morning’s Bible class and began by relating multiple tragic events his family has suffered over the last few years, including several heart attacks his father has suffered and his mother’s suffering from an auto-immune disease. Former camper Kelsey Harris lost her battle with a brain tumor a couple years ago, but she was spiritually victorious. She overcame her tragedies with her signature motto: “Life is more interesting when you’re happy.” Sports director Stacy King has been battling cancer for the past seven years, but her strong faith in the Lord gets her and her family through the hard times. The key to triumphing over tragedy is joy in the Lord.
Everyone hurts and is burdened at times. Everyone has been victorious at overcoming something in their lives at some point. Here are some examples from the scriptures:
1. Gideon and his army were able to overcome because God was with them (Judges 6 & 7)
2. David triumphed over tragedy after his affair with Bathsheba. Psalm 51:3 – “For I acknowledge my transgressions and my sin is ever before me.” David took responsibility for his actions (Psalm 32:3,4) and God delivered David and he overcame — “Thou art my hiding place; Thou shalt preserve me from trouble; Thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance” (Psalm 32:7). David was a man after God’s own heart and he said, “Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart” (Psalm 32:11).
3. Jesus was the perfect example of victory–victory over death when He was resurrected from the dead (Acts 2:17-38). It is through Christ’s death and resurrection that we have the opportunity to be victorious–“And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Despite your circumstances, whatever tragedy or struggle you might be suffering, praise God and be victorious. God is always with us (I Corinthians 10:13). God is longsuffering and wants no one to perish (II Peter 3:9). Let your joy come from God!
