Monday Morning Flagpole

It’s a BEAUTIFULLY SUNNY day here at Shakamak and to start off our morning, sports staff member Drew Maudlin led our thoughts during our flagpole devotion. With our overall theme of “Impossible is Nothing” this week, today’s particular theme is “Peace.”

Psalm 34:11-16: “Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Who is the man who desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit. Depart from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry. The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.”

With so much bullying in the world today, it is important that we learn to have peace with one another. Bullies have always been in the world, even when Jesus was here on earth. Jesus was tempted and mocked while on this earth, but He did not recripocate bullying.

Making peace with each other is unfortunately not the norm these days. Society teaches us to stand up against bullies. We live in a society where violence needs to be used in violent situations: this can be physical violence as kids are bringing guns to school; this can be mental as even kids are commiting suicide as a result of bullying; and this can be verbal as bullies are lashing out at innocent kids. Is this what God wants from us?  NO!!!!!

When we are being bullied, we need to ask ourselves What Would Jesus Do (WWJD)? Jesus was tested, threatened, tried, and tempted, but He showed self-control. Matthew 5:39 – “But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.”

When being bullied, it is our choice whether we want to be offended, angry, hurt, or depressed. We need to walk away and not give into sin. I Peter 3:10-12: “He who would love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit. Let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayers; but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”
