Can we be sanctified like a toothbrush? A special lesson by Corey Willis

0244-Corey

Corey Willis joined us Sunday evening to present a lesson on sanctification to go along with our theme this week; “More than Conquerors.”  To help the campers understand what sanctification is, he used a toothbrush illustration.  Wait…..stay with me….let me tell you more!

Corey asked the kids what happens to your old toothbrush once you get a new toothbrush?    The kids all had various answers (things like cleaning tires and shoes and what not) but all agreed; once you have a new one, the old one has a new purpose and it no longer goes back into your mouth!   That’s the idea of “sanctification” – setting something apart for a specific use.  We want our toothbrush set apart for only the purpose of cleaning our teeth, right?

God set many things apart in the Bible specifically for his use.  For example:

  • Tent of Meeting: they didn’t use the LORD’s tent for concerts and parties
  • Aaron and his sons were set apart to dedicate the most holy things.  (I Chronicles 23:13)
  • The Lord set apart items used in worship (Exodus 29:43) such as:
    • Altar: they didn’t use the altar to grill out their food
    • The shewbread: they didn’t eat the shewbread when they were hungry
    • The candlestick: they didn’t use the candlestick for their own light

Guess what else the Lord set apart…..US!  We are to be sanctified; no longer involved in the sin of the world – II Timothy 2:21-23 and I Corinthians 6:9-11.

How can you be sanctified like your toothbrush?

  • In Purity – From the language you use to the things you participate in, we must ensure our actions reflect Christ in us to be set apart from the world.  I Timothy 4:12
  • In Obedience – The Lord has given us boundaries.  Just like on the sports fields at camp, when you play you must stay “in bounds.” In the same way, we must submit to God and stay within the boundaries he has set.  John 8:31 and James 4:7
  • In the way you treat others – Love everyone!  Make new friends this week.  Like Tammy Walker always says, “Make three new friends today!”  Make sure you are always building others up so the world can see your light shine and that you are different.  And always remember to be kind and offer forgiveness to each other.  John 13: 34, Ephesians 4: 29, Ephesians 4:32

Let us be instruments to serve him – Romans 12:1 – “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”

A special thank you to Corey for kicking the week of with an excellent lesson to help the kids be “More than Conquerors!”
